This paper will be worth 70 points or 7 % of your final course
grade. The paper should be at least 300 words long and should be written
in paragraph form.
If you cannot locate enough information to meet the word count, try
going beyond the textbook to include a cited web source such as
“smarthistory.org.” Do not use Wikipedia.
When reacting or interpreting the meaning, messages, emotions, or
ideas in a work of art, there are three points of view to consider: Pick
either A or B, then finally provide your own reaction with C.
Choose two and use these headings: (1) Artist Intent (2) Expert Opinion (3) My Own Reaction:
(1) Artist Intent: Try to find information about what the
artist intention was in the creation of a work of art. Look at the web
sites referenced in Week Two writing about art assignment. The Smart
History web site is a great source. Were there messages, emotions or
ideas based on artist experiences? Be sure to consider the cultural
background and history of the artist. How did a political or social
climate or an era of art play into the way this artist created this
particular work of art? Be sure to point out the details that suggest
these meanings.
(2) Expert: an art critic or historian point of view about
what messages, emotions or ideas are suggested in a work of art. Look at
the web sites referenced in Week Two writing about art assignment. The
Smart History web site is a great source. Be sure to find how the expert
suggests meanings that are historically, culturally, politically or HUMN101: Writing About Art and Culture
socially significant. How did a political or social climate or an era
of art play into the way this expert analyzes and interprets the
meaning of the messages in this particular work of art? Be sure to point
out the details that suggest these meanings.
(3) Your Own Reaction: Now, it is your turn! After gaining
insights from one of A or B, share your own point of view about what
messages, emotions, or ideas are suggested in a work of art that are
personal. This would include how your own personal experiences or
cultural background influences your reactions to this work of art. Be
sure to point out the details that suggest your reactions.
You will need to do some research and cite your sources (APA format).
Use these headings: Artist or Expert Point of View; My Point of View
