Well-planned and well-delivered. Includes title, introduction (if applicable), transitions and a concluding statement. Mechanics are very strong. There are no missing steps, and the directions pinpoint the exact task.

The instructions are effective, but parts could be clearer in mechanics and syntax. There are no missing steps and the directions deliver the appropriate task; however, the wording might be slightly ineffective in 1 area.

The instructions deliver the appropriate task, but the phrasing is unclear in multiple steps. Average mechanics and syntax. Or, at least 1 step missing: the user is forced to infer the writer’s plan.

Poor

There is a very scattered sense of organization. The instructions are out-or-order or extremely ill-worded. Meaning is lost from garbled sentence construction. The are multiple steps missing from the directions; the user cannot replicate the task as given.

Failure to complete the task

There may be no sense of organization and/or no sense of mechanics or syntax. Or, it is impossible to complete the task as steps are written — the user has to completely infer the writer’s plan. Or, too much may steps are missing to replicate any parts of the task.

Overall design is good, but could be better. Effective use of white space. Graphics are effective for the overall meaning of directions but could be ineffective image choices.

The directions are clear, but there is no overall contribution from the design or use of white space. Graphics are noticeably out-of-place / do not contribute to the overall task.

Poor

Extremely ineffective design and use of graphics / design and graphics don’t even seem to be a factor for the instructional document.

Failure to Complete the Task

One or more of the following are present: no Graphics are used. No sense of design to the document.
