Topic 4 DQ 1

Please respond with a paragraph to the following question, add citations and references:

It’s important to understand how various healthcare systems operate in your community and what potential barriers there are to implementing evidence-based practice. Several factors can contribute to decisions that healthcare systems make regarding EBP and those can be influenced by politics, healthcare rules and regulations and local government issues. Magnet designated hospitals can have issues implementing EBP, but are more receptive to the idea and understand the importance of quality outcomes for patient care. Nurses that have advanced nursing degrees and are in leadership roles are more receptive to implementing EBP. Transformational nurse leaders embrace Magnet principles and believe in the importance of sharing best practices along with advanced competencies and tools. Attending Magnet conferences can help educate and mentor nurses by using strategies to increase their knowledge on EBP and the importance of using these policies to improve outcomes (Warren, et al., 2016, para. 3).

When discussing this topic with my mentor, she mentioned some of the challenges of incorporating new policies within their healthcare system. She said there must be leadership buy-in and accountability with staff. Education must be well thought out and receive end user (staff) approval with a trial run through the information. This will ensure staff buy-in, as we sought their input before implementing any EBP changes. Also, there are different cultural backgrounds that influence some of their opinions and resistance to change.
